On her graduation day at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Miss Aggrey Fynn Maame Ama Egyirba did more than receive her degree. Draped across her stole was a message that told the story behind her journey: “Elevated by my mum and uncles’ investment.”
After losing her father a decade ago, Maame Ama recalls the struggles her mother faced raising six children alone.
“My mother went through all of that alone,” she said. “At some point, my uncle stepped in.”
Her uncle’s support extended beyond emotional encouragement.
After completing a certificate in nursing and spending a year at home without employment, she said, he helped her secure a position in the security service as a nurse, a role that became a stepping stone in her professional journey.
“It’s not only me, he’s helping all of us,” she said.
The inscription on her stole was intentional. In a single line, she chose to make visible what often remains unseen: the investments of family members whose sacrifices rarely make it onto graduation stages.
